A Large Municipal Airport Selects Microwave Networks Proteus MX

Stafford, TX, USA – May 9, 2017.  Microwave Networks, Inc., a trusted and global provider of microwave radios, MPLS, and cyber security solutions, reports a municipal airport has selected Microwave Networks’ Proteus MX microwave radios.

The airport selected the Proteus MX because of its reliability. The Proteus MX is configured for hot standby (1+1), providing mission critical reliability and availability.  When configured for hot standby, the Proteus point-to-point radios incorporate active circuit redundancy, with no single point of failure, to ensure network reliability. Microwave Network engineers also designed Adaptive Code & Modulation into the links, to bolster link reliability in the airport’s network. Furthermore the MX radio is indoor mounted for ease of maintenance, enhancing reliability. The hybrid Proteus MX radios is licensed in the 11 GHz band, transporting native TDM and native Ethernet data communications, and offering advanced Ethernet networking features, while supporting legacy TDM devices such as DS1 circuits.

Available in a complete range of frequencies from 4 GHz to 80 GHz bands, the Proteus radios support mission reliability requirements in public safety, government, critical infrastructure, utilities, and mobile operator networks. Proteus radios are available in all-indoor, split-mount, or all outdoor configurations.

California City Selects Microwave Networks Proteus MX-D Radios

Stafford, TX, USA – March 28, 2017.  Microwave Networks, Inc., a trusted and global provider of microwave, networking, and cyber security solutions, has won an award for its Proteus MX-D East-West radios from a California city. The city will deploy the Proteus MX-D East-West radios in a loop protected network for its public safety land mobile radio system. The new Proteus MX-D replaces the city’s aging microwave system, augmenting throughput capacity to 155 Mbps while providing high reliability and network availability.

In addition Microwave Networks provides a complete turnkey solution which includes a custom network design, program management, path and site surveys, frequency coordination, equipment installation, and training. As part of the replacement services, Microwave Networks will also decommission the old microwave network. The design includes split mounted 11 GHz MX-D east-west radios, a hybrid solution supporting both native TDM and Ethernet communications traffic. It also includes the SPARCS Element Manager and Network Health App on Apple iPad Pros, which allow network managers to remotely monitor network link conditions, status, and alerts.

Mission Critical Reliability and Availability
The Proteus MX-D East-West radios, deployed in a ring topology, provide protection against path disruption or hardware failure by automatically providing alternate traffic routing around a failed hop. For Ethernet protection, the Proteus MX-D includes Rapid Ring Protection Plus (RRP +) which allow the radios to transmit traffic in either direction around a ring, ensuring each site has two paths available to transmit and receive Ethernet data. Ring networks frequently include multiple rings; the Proteus MX-D can support as many as ten.

Southwestern County Selects Microwave Networks FIPS-140-2 Certified MX Radios

The county has selected a mission critical microwave system, designed by Microwave Networks, to provide high network availability and encryption that meets Federal government standards. 

The Proteus MX radio is a hybrid radio that provides native TDM (time division multiplexing) and Ethernet protocols. TDM is the foundation for legacy T1 circuits, while Ethernet is the foundation for IP (Internet Protocol) networks. The Proteus MX supports legacy, current, and future networks. It is the only hybrid microwave radio in the market.

Preparing for IP Mission Critical P25 and LTE Networks
Microwave Networks’ FIPS 140-2 MX radios are part of the company’s CyberShield family of cyber security and advanced networking products. CyberShield products include encryption, identity management, security gateways, and IP/MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), designed to support all IP mission critical P25 and LTE networks, including FirstNet. The Proteus MX FIPS 140 2 –Level 2 Certified Radio
The Proteus MX radio is certified for FIPS 140-2 Level 2. The FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) 140-2 is a U.S. government computer network security standard used to accredit cryptographic modules. Protection of a cryptographic module within a security system is necessary to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of the information protected by the module. Level 2 certification means the crypto module meets NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) standards for software and hardware. NIST maintains a validation list of vendors for its 140-2 cryptographic standards. State and local government or critical infrastructure organizations that need to protect their networks using FIPS 140-2 Level 2 standards can do so using the FIPS 140-2 validated MX microwave radio.

The Importance of a Hybrid Radio
The Proteus MX radio is a hybrid radio. A hybrid microwave radio supports both native TDM and native Ethernet communications traffic, allowing the TDM traffic to be transported without conversion to IP. Native TDM microwave radios are faster, more efficient, and less likely to cause jitter than emulated TDM, known as pseudowire which is method to convert TDM to IP. Furthermore native TDM radios are easy to configure and maintain. However TDM only radios cannot support Ethernet and IP services. So a hybrid radio with native Ethernet is needed too.

As LMR networks transition from legacy to modern IP networks, the networks that still use legacy TDM circuits and devices are best served with hybrid microwave radios. As the use of TDM circuits and devices decreases over time, managers can use greater portions of the hybrid radios’ Ethernet bandwidth for Ethernet and IP services, gracefully retiring TDM circuits and devices while augmenting Ethernet capacity.
